It is no surprise to many caregiving providers that self-direction has exponentially increased in the last five years. With the recent publication of the 2023 National Inventory of Self-Directed Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS), individuals prefer self-direction services’ independence and versatility. Direct Care Innovations offers small and large self-directed agencies business management software services. Keep reading to learn why self-direction enrollment has increased, how consumer-direction serves veterans, and how our software can help you effectively run your self-directed caregiving organization.
According to the 2023 National Inventory of Self-Directed LTSS, enrollment in Veteran-Directed Care services more than doubled compared to the previous Inventory. In 2019, 2,353 veterans receiving Consumer-Direction Care services were self-directing, whereas 6,041 veterans are currently enrolled in self-direction programs, representing an increase of 157% since 2019. Data was also calculated for individuals served per Veteran-Directed Care sites, with 33 veterans per site in 2019 and 88 veterans per site last year.
Notably, the number of states offering self-direction for veterans has declined from 41 to 38. Despite this, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has affirmed the expansion of Veteran-Directed Care Services in all Veterans Affairs Medical Centers by 2026. This move by the VHA will allow most veterans living with disabilities to take advantage of self-direction programs and have more control over their individual care.
Self-direction can be a wise choice for veterans who wish to manage their caregiving services. It is more cost-effective than alternative programs, such as nursing homes and in-patient services, and it gives participants the flexibility and freedom to manage their care. In addition to managing their own care, individuals can hire their caregivers of choice, including friends and family members, set their budget and direct funds as they see fit, and choose how they want their services implemented, whether at home or in a community-based environment.
